What is a residency?
A residency is how we build inside a business we don't own. A proven operator and a small, hand-picked crew join a company to build a commercial capability with the people who run it — a new revenue line, a go-to-market engine, a commercial team — and leave it running. It is execution, not advice.
Why in residence
The real constraint in a business is rarely visible from the outside. It shows up in how deals die, how offers are packaged, and what the founder still holds. You find it by sitting inside the operating rhythm — in pipeline reviews and the P&L, not in a discovery workshop. So we work from the inside, with the people who will own what gets built.
What gets built
Working engines — commercial, technical, or both. An offer a market recognises, a sales motion that runs to a rhythm, a team with the roles and rituals to carry it. Sometimes the engine is technology: a platform, a portal, an AI capability — built the same way, and judged the same way, by the business value it moves. In a recent residency, that meant a data practice stood up inside a mid-market company in twelve weeks — $6M of qualified pipeline behind it.
How long it runs
Twelve weeks, run as three 30-day cycles. Every cycle ends with something shipped and a decision — continue or stop. The first thirty days are laid out here in full.
What remains
The capability, and the operating layer under it: the plays, the decisions, the reasons — written down while the work happens, not reconstructed afterwards. Where it fits, that layer is built on Kamber, a company we built for exactly this problem — and where it doesn't, it isn't. A residency is not a route to market for our own software; that distinction is the whole point of keeping them separate. A residency is designed to end. That is the point of it, and the difference from consulting.
Who asks for one
Founders whose company has outgrown its commercial engine. PE operating partners with a portfolio business where the strategy is signed off and the number still isn't moving. Leaders who want the capability owned in-house, not rented. We take a few residencies at a time.
